Guangzhou R&F have secured their first point in the 2023 Chinese Super League (CSL) after defeating Shanghai Shenhua 1-0 at home on Sunday.
The victory was achieved thanks to a goal from Guangzhou's Lu Zhaoyang, who scored the only goal of the game with a well-taken header in the 69th minute.
It was a much-needed result for Guangzhou, who had struggled to find their form in the early stages of the season and were currently sitting in ninth place in the table.
However, the victory against Shanghai Shenhua was a significant step forward for the team as they look to secure a playoff spot and qualify for next year's AFC Champions League.
The match was closely contested throughout, with both teams creating numerous chances but failing to score before the final whistle.
Despite not scoring any goals themselves, Guangzhou were able to hold onto their lead until the end, which was a testament to their defensive solidity and the quality of their goalkeeper, Xu Zheng.
With just two games remaining in the CSL, Guangzhou will be looking to build on this win and continue their upward trajectory towards securing a playoff spot and qualification for the AFC Champions League.
